Today I took the Hermit to watch a film from his adopted country of Brazil.

O Último Azul is the title in Portuguese. When I look at its English title, The Blue Trail, I wonder where the “ultimate” or “final” went. With my Spanish and frequent exposure to Portuguese, I was expecting something closer to “The Ultimate Blue.” In the end, the film delivered just that.

At lunch afterward, we talked about inherited behaviours from our parents — about the “deterministic self.” The first step toward change in our behaviour is recognising when we’re acting in these programmed ways. Only then can we choose to do something different. It doesn’t always happen right away, but little by little, awareness grows, and new pathways can form.
