While driving through a tunnel section of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, it's tempting to pick up speed, racing to reach the inviting sunlight and open air at the other end. It's a little unnerving plunging beneath the bay in your car, thinking about the ocean depths just a few layers of concrete away.
An alternating series of bridges and underwater tunnels, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel system was built in 1964 and spans 17.6 miles of open water, connecting the Virginia Beach mainland with the Delaware Peninsula.
This is a bonus photo gifted to the Top Collector of the "Inviting You Through" series, a collection of windows, archways, and covered passages, which will invite you to look or travel through them, to see what's on the other side, or simply enjoy the journey of getting there.
