After passing the Golden Gate, beyond the commotion of mid-day rush hour and the bustling sidewalks, there is a remote, rugged landscape of Redwoods and cascading seaside cliffs. The roads of Highway 1 sway from side to side in a gentle dance between the sandy beaches and exposed rock.
The smell in the air could be bottled and labeled “Sea Salt and Ocean Mist”, but would lack a certain essence felt in person. Driving South, I dip in and out of the low marine layer that is clinging to the tops of the coastal bluffs.
I admire my surroundings and feel instantly transported to the pages of a fairytale. Turquoise waters, sun-kissed earth, and a faint trail of a waterfall uniting them together. The last glow sun paints the horizon in the distance before disappearing into the clouds.
As I pull away, I join the familiar trickle of taillights away from the coast and back into the city.
