The lifeguard towers along the coast of Southern California are unmanned at night... They stand there, silent sentinels, as the waves swirl and crash just below. Under the summer sun, they're symbols of safety, in addition to the tangible benefit of increasing the lifeguards' line of sight. But at night, they take on an altogether more somber character, as if taunting the sea: "We live here, just beyond the shoreline, up the sandy hills in our cities and towns. You can snatch up our belongings when the tide is high, but you can never take our community."
For Caleb, who's provided me with one of my favorite close-knit communities since joining this space!
