Written by the De Curtis brothers in 1902, “Torna a Surriento” is Sorrento’s unofficial anthem, famously composed to honor Prime Minister Giuseppe Zanardelli. While celebrating the town’s beauty, the lyrics are a plea to the Prime Minister to fulfill promises of infrastructure improvements, such as a new sewage system, during his stay at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano.
In this interpretation, Red Alark (the singer) embodies the soul waiting and actively pleading for the traveler to turn their ship around and return while there is still time.
