Marshal Josip Broz Tito GColIH (Kumrovec, May 7, 1892—Ljubljana, May 4, 1980) was a Yugoslav military, communist revolutionary, and statesman, leader of his country's resistance guerrillas, called partisans, during World War II , being most responsible for the armed resistance to the Axis forces and to the Croatian and Serb Nazi-fascists, even without political and material support from the Allies. Later, Tito would become president of Yugoslavia, a position he held from 1953 until 1980, the year of his death.
