“tinti” began as a writing exercise using the tintinnabuli technique developed by Arvo Pärt, the minimalist contemporary composer from Estonia. This technique consists of creating two or more simple melodic lines governed by mathematical rules defined for each piece.
During the first proscrypta.mp3 meeting, I wrote two short themes, experimenting with a mathematical rigor slightly different from what Arvo Pärt proposed, and then recorded them with clarinet, bass clarinet, and virtual synthesizers. In the middle of this process, my dear colleague Prahlada shared his piece pesadelo with the group, and I felt it could be the missing thread to connect the two themes. So I sampled Prahlada’s pesadelo, applied some digital effects, and recorded clarinet and bass clarinet improvisations over it.
I still felt something was missing and couldn’t quite figure out what, until the glorious Ave Fufy shared her work Mermaid or Horny at the Rooster. I realized it had certain accents that were exactly what tinti needed. I sampled and chopped up the rooster, added some seasoning — and there it was, pure luxury.
