Lake Alajuela is an artificial body of water created by a network of dams as part of the Panama Canal basin strategy. The lake levels vary according to the season, and has preserved colonial roads which were walked by millions over centuries. Much of the gold retrieved during the 1849 Gold Rush went through this valley. Remnants of one of the main roads lies not far from where this lone boatsman waits for his passengers. Transportation between towns that were isolated as a consequence of the flooding is done largely by boat.
