When I was a kid, about 3 years old, I got my head stuck in this sculpture. There was a replica of it outside of my local library. It’s one of my earliest memories. My head was stuck between the arm who’s fist was resting upon the thinker’s chin. This may have been my first spark of curiosity. “I wonder if I can fit my head in there?” I remember it as a terrifying moment. I thought I would never escape. But the beauty of that moment and the symbolism of Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker” sculpture evokes in me today a realization of the curiosity I have always had and the desire to fuel that curiosity with creativity. It is something I cannot explain, but only feel through my creations. My music, my art. This representation of the thinker in a void with a piano glowing in front is a simple metaphor for my mind, my thoughts. The vastness of what is imaginable. The infinite. How small I feel. How I cannot get out of my head sometimes. How creating art has saved me. To express oneself through art is to express the universal, personal experiences we all have.
