Raijin (雷神) is the Japanese god of storms- an anarchic immortal who blesses the world with vital rains whilst spouting chaos and destruction. Appearing in many parts of Japanese folklore, he was an offspring of the creator deities Izanagi and Izanami. Born of Izanami’s rotting corpse after she descended to Yomi, the Land of Darkness and Death. A master of thunder and lightning, Raijin’s complete power over storms is both feared and admired by the Japanese. The legend about Raijin devouring children who refused to hide their belly buttons during thunderstorms is being told to this day.
