The Spectacle
This piece confronts the viewer with the visceral reality of the act of slaughter for sustenance. The composition centers around a sliced cow, whereby its form is dissected by radiating rings, signaling the immediate impact of each cut. The background, a desolate wasteland, frames the scene for a meditative contemplation of the moral complexities inherent in our meat consumption.
Critics may find a resemblance to Damien Hirst's "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" (1991), but "The Spectacle" is a direct response moving beyond Hirst into specific details concerning Animal Rights. Inspired by Kat Lyon's painting "Seams of the Interior" (2021), this piece diverges by emphasizing the present, capturing a raw tension between moral consideration and the brutal, physical reality of slaughter. Unlike Lyon's conceptual focus on pain, non-human empathy, and identity, "The Spectacle" thrusts the viewer into the visceral reality of the act, presenting a clear division between the spectator's rational and irrational judgments of a creature habitually viewed as a commodity.
The reddish hues, punctuated by varied colors resembling impact fields, intensify the Baroquean drama inherent in the composition. Seven large butcher knives at the bottom, resembling rib bones, underscore the systematic nature of the process. A subtle asymmetry breaks through the vertical impacts, repetitive and formal as they are, by a radiating force emitting from the cow's mouth - blurring its auditory call through the effects of metal interacting with organic matter. The cow's head, facing away from the viewing plane, is a symbol of deliberate detachment. Its aversion further mirrors the uncomfortable reality of animal commodification without the shield of human avoidance.
"The Spectacle" forces us to confront our immediate habits of perceiving animal life, urging us to reevaluate the disconnect between the aesthetic delight we derive from the visual spectacle of death - escalated by an emotional event superseded by physical, causal forces.
The piece is sized at about 30" x 17" in loss-less PNG format.
