Cerberus was a three-headed dog who guarded the entrance to the underworld, the gate of Hades' palace. Cerberus would let the souls of the dead in but would not let them out. This three-headed hellhound was the eldest child of Typhon and Echidna. Cerberus was also Hades' most beloved pet.
Each head of Cerberus could see and represent 3 periods, namely the past, present and future. It means that he could see a person's birth, life, and death.
Cerberus' job was to ensure the dead stayed inside the gate. Only a few heroes managed to escape Cerberus' guard, one of them was Hercules. However, the Greeks documented in their myths that Cerberus liked sweet foods such as cakes, honey, and music that sounded endearing and melodious. This was a disadvantage for Cerberus, where the great Musician Orpheus could enchant him with the sound of his lute. While Psyche and the Trojan prince Aeneas could appease Cerberus with a honey cake. Therefore they could continue their journey through the underworld.
