The Madness News Reader was a magazine edited in the mid-1970s by two female inmates of the Agnews State Hospital in Porland, Oregon, pioneers of the “Psychiatric Survivors Movement” in the United States and the world.
It was made up of psychiatric survivors, and one of its main tasks was the denunciation and the call to take legal action on the harsh conditions and forced treatment in psychiatric institutions. Many of these practices have not been overcome today.
I made this collage with some clippings from my early psychology books. It has been many, many years of a career that I have not practiced as someone who has an office and sees patients all morning. But that certainly made me sensitive to social injustice and the "normalcy" trap.
