Last year, I minted a piece titled "The Real MOCHI" as the first piece of 2025 and I thought I would make a mochi piece again as the first piece of the year. I think mochi has become known world wide in recent years, but I think what most people know as mochi is just a variation of mochi made into sweets or ice cream desserts and what mochi is to us Japanese is the raw mochi that is plain made into savory dishes eaten especially in the beginning of the new year. When depicting mochi, the popular motif is when you heat up the little mochi squares, it puffs up quite dramatically and that's when you know it's done and ready to eat. Some people love it, some don't, but either way, it's everywhere in Japan at this time of the year.
