In 1866 during the Cretan revolution nearly 1000 people, mostly women and children, sought refuge at the monastery of Arkadi from the attacking Ottoman army. After a 2 day siege the women, children and other survivors locked themselves in hiding in the gunpowder room. When the Ottomans attacked the room was set a light, sacrificing themselves and many of their attackers. The remains can be seen today in a small ossuary at he monastery of Arkadi.
May they Rest in Peace.
