At some point, all of us pause and wonder: beneath every label, every title, every role others have pressed onto us — who am I, really? And who is he (she), behind the face the world has decided to show him (her) ? These questions surface most sharply when we feel the weight of being judged, measured, and filed away by strangers who never bother to look past the surface. There is a particular cruelty in being stared at — reduced to a thing on display, admired or dismissed without ever being truly seen. A doll neither speaks nor resists; it simply sits, waiting for someone else to decide its worth. And so we sometimes feel ourselves turning into that doll, our humanity traded for a neat label someone found convenient. The discomfort is that no one recognizes the person underneath — not even, at times, ourselves.
