A line blend is a series of tests revealing steps between two material samples. In this case the blend begins with an almost white matte glaze and ends with an almost black matte glaze, exploring a range of grey colors. Test tiles are small ceramic objects or shards typically used to test a surface treatments such as glazes, slips, or just a bare clay body. Typically the production of ceramic test tiles is a relatively low stakes research effort that accompanies the production of more complex sculpture or pottery forms.

The steps in this line blend ultimately veered away from grayness, and ended up with some olive or celadon-like colors.
