Syrinx is a figure from Greek mythology who was a water nymph. She is best known for the story of her transformation into a group of reeds, which is often associated with the origins of the musical instrument known as the pan flute. According to the myth, Syrinx was pursued by the god Pan, who was infatuated with her. As she fled from him, she begged the river god to help her, and he transformed her into a cluster of reeds. When Pan tried to grab her, he found only the reeds in his hands and, in his grief, he cut them into pieces and fashioned them into a musical instrument that he named after her. In some versions of the story, Syrinx is said to have been transformed into a set of panpipes, which were then played by Pan in her memory. Syrinx is often depicted as a beautiful young woman.
