Yulia was relieved to be back in her hotel room, away from the sweltering heat of the Lisbon afternoon. She slipped off her dress and let out a deep breath, feeling the cool air on her skin.
As she glanced up, she noticed that the picture above her bed was askew. Without hesitation, she climbed onto the bed to fix it.
As she straightened the frame, she heard a soft tapping at the door. She paused for a moment, wondering who it could be.
Intrigued by the mysterious knocking, Yulia sprang to her feet and ran to the door. She flung it open, ready to confront whoever was on the other side.
But as she stepped out into the hallway, she was greeted by silence. The corridor was empty, with no sign of anyone but a black cat sitting at the end of the corridor. Its bright green eyes seemed to be staring straight at her, unblinking. Yulia found herself transfixed by its piercing eyes, unable to look away.
Finally, with a flick of its tail, the cat turned and sauntered off down the hallway. Yulia watched it disappear from view, still feeling the weight of its gaze upon her.
