One of Oahu’s most famous landmarks built in 1909, sits on a 600-foot sea cliff overlooking Waimanalo Bay. According to old legend, Makapu'u was a supernatural being living on the point with her 8 big eyes.

Being the largest lens in the USA at 12-tons; it was so impressive they first displayed it at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair before shipping to Oahu.

This beacon isn’t without tragedy. In late 1909 an accident caused an explosion, blistering the service room and injuring Head Keeper Toomey. In spite of his state, he told his wife to “stand by the light, and keep it burning” instead of attending him at the hospital.
