As a bored kid in elementary school, counting away the minutes until the bell, I became obsessed with mechanical pencils and graph paper. The perfect square grid the paper provided were my yet to be discovered computer screen pixels and gateway to drawing simple shapes to create complex patterns.
The Simple Shapes series hopes to capture that fond analog memory in the digital world by creating complex but soothing patterns and transitions using only simple 2 dimensional shapes.
03 Pentagons - As we start to add more layers of shapes and necessarily complicate the pattern and color gradient slightly, we start to lose sight of the shapes and see movements familiar from nature. It helps me conceptualize the role math and shapes play in our perception of reality. Perhaps it is all just 0s and 1s.
This is 160 pentagons moving back and forth around the perimeter of a hexagon at distances that rise and fall from one vertex to the next. Or, a jellyfish.
