‘Shared Memory’ breathes new life into an old 8mm home movie, filmed by my father 48 years ago, capturing a tender moment between me as a baby and my mother. The 8mm was transcoded, a GIF rendered, then passed through analog glitch gear and displayed on an old CRT tv. The image was then re-recorded with a digital camera to preserve the flickering CRT lines. The final GIF is composed of 11 glitched versions of the 8mm footage and digitally masked together. The outer turmoil hides a warm silence I feel every time I get lost in turning knobs. This process loops the past into the present, eternally replaying a moment that honors my mother’s unwavering support for my dreams. It symbolizes the convergence of time and tools. In this seamless cycle of analog and digital, the work questions the nature of mistakes—are they truly glitches, or are they part of life’s design? ‘Shared Memory’ stands as both a homage to family and an exploration of the intricate relationship between nostalgia, technology, and fate.
