A self-portrait is a representation of an artist that is created by that artist. Although self-portraits have existed since antiquity, it was not until the mid-fifteenth century that artists were frequently identified as depicting themselves. The self-portrait implies, in theory, the use of a mirror, but most mirrors I've seen don't always reflect what I want to see.
