Drawing on Chinese seal script, Xie was interested in its pictorial nature and the way it sits in transition between the representational forms of early language and the abstraction of later Han script. She fractures these characters through code, distorting them into something unfamiliar while preserving the quiet, scroll-like cadence of the originals, breaking apart the old, and sewing it back together. Much like Xie's own heritage, the seal script characters, though distorted, retain their underlying shapes and identities––a semblance of the past, carried into the present in altered form through a technological context.
