To represent the concept of scalability in a visual way, I was inspired by nature and plants. I represented this concept by means of tree growth rings, drawing shapes that resembled the section of a cut tree. Each ring represents the growth of the tree and its ability to adapt to its environment while continuing to function effectively. This may involve a variety of different strategies, such as increasing root depth or branching to support a larger crown, or developing mechanisms to conserve water and nutrients to survive in a dry or nutrient-poor environment.
A key aspect of scalability in trees is the ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions over time. As a tree grows, it must be able to respond to changes in its environment, such as changes in temperature, moisture levels, or sunlight availability. By developing the right structures and mechanisms to support its growth, a tree can continue to thrive and sustain a healthy ecosystem, even in the face of changing conditions. Overall, the concept of scalability in trees emphasizes the importance of adaptability and flexibility in ensuring the continued success and growth of trees in a variety of different environments.
The work was accomplished by constructing a generative algorithm written in Javascript that draws each ring starting from the center by gradually adding the outer layers, just as the tree itself would. A very large number of variations can be generated through the algorithm, adjusting the number of circles, the thickness of each circle, the size of the inner pith, the thickness of the bark, colors, and more.
