Mid Gesture Surplus -> Line_Portrait_Series_001, wire hanger, photographed on cloth. 2026.

Have you ever kept drawing without lifting the pen, and then noticed that the line was making the decisions for you? That is what this is. The pen is a length of wire and the paper is gone.

I have been making portraits out of continuous line for years, on paper, in vector, in paint on a wall, in code. This time I wanted the line to have weight, so I bent it. The wire leaves the crown of the head, runs down the side of the face, curls into an eye, drops into a nose, opens into a mouth, and comes back up to close the skull. Where it had to hold itself together I wrapped it, and I left those coils showing. They are the seams. They are also the proof that a hand was here.

A few marks float free of the structure. A detail under one eye, a small break above the other, a hook that connects to nothing. Those are the gestures.

Wire will not lie for you. Paper forgives. Photoshop forgives endlessly. Wire keeps every place you were unsure, right there in the metal, and it holds onto it long after you have made your peace with it.

And because the drawing has thickness, it throws a second drawing down beside itself. A soft gray twin that moves whenever the light moves. The photograph holds one instant of that. A face, and the shadow of a face, resting on cloth like something set down for a moment.

This is 001. More are coming here.
