Rest: Beyond the River

This hand-drawn animation brings to life "Untitled, Amerie (2022), an artwork in the "Rest as Reparations" series by Miami-based multidisciplinary artist Chris Friday.

The illustration creates an imagined environment where the Black body can experience rest and joy in the here and now; refuting long-held religious traditions that treat rest and joy as luxuries and rewards, obtained only in the hereafter.

This digital artwork is published in editions of 5 to symbolize the 5 Steps of Reparations, (Cessation/Assurance of Non-Repetition, Restitution and Repatriation, Compensation, Satisfaction, and Rehabilitation), as well as the biblical numerological meaning of the number 5 which symbolizes freedom and change.
