This Video Art was made for a group exhibition called “PlayGround,” which was held in November 2012.
The original artwork showcase with CRT Monitors, which represents the old era of using computers.
Here in this video, you watch the loop of refreshing the desktop and repositioning the default icons on Windows XP.
As a millennial, I have seen different generations of the computer and technology world, from the Atari to Playstation era, and from DOS to Windows, etc. When I was a kid and had super slow and sometimes no internet connection, I spent some of my time refreshing the desktop on my Windows XP, waiting for the dial-up tone to screech its success. Selecting folders and refresh again was also a meditative loop to kill time when I was waiting to install new software or games. As I spoke to more people, I understood that this habit was not just for me, and many of my friends also did the same thing when they are bored or don’t have anything else to do.
