The nuclear reactors that fueled the ARCHERO were getting too hot and became agitated. The only way to prevent a meltdown was to open the large bay doors. In doing so, Fitts and Matheson were able to escape the pressures of the day for a few moments and catch a glimpse of the planet Sucra-87 as their ship passed by.
