Questgiver is a satirical app developed by paleh0rs3 to ask the question:
"What if mid-conversation we could pull up an Uber-style app to break free from the imposed limits on acceptable thoughts?"
In almost any social situation we're implicitly forced to choose from a set of response options as if we're non-playable characters, or quest givers, in a video game. And often this is for good reason: the human mind harbors darkness and despair that our fellow citizens are usually best left unaware of.
We often joke about living in a simulation to conjure apprehension, but on some axes, we're most comfortable when the options are limited and predictable.
Questgiver's UI was handcrafted for the 16:9 aspect ratio optimal for displaying Async pieces on televisions and digital frames. The concept for a "Questgiver Terminal" was inspired by the "expected waiting time" screens for public transport / ridesharing apps in high-end lobbies. It gives a publicly observable screen on which passersby can view nearby Questgivers engaging in uncomfortable conversations.
Each conversation features completely fake yet convincing human portraits generated via AI on ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com. In addition, the conversations utilize a stylized "dialog tree," which is actually a method employed to model NPC interactions in video games. Each dialog tree is spawned by a remark from the non-Questgiver. The first column of the tree contains two "socially acceptable" responses that have been greyed out in favor of the transgressive response. The app then generates a predicted counter-response to the Questgiver's unacceptably choice words, which prompts three more even worse options to become available.
Since it was designed to be shown on a public display in a well-trafficked area, the concept was a natural fit for the 24H Async template. At each hour of the day, a new Questgiver is highlighted to emulate the dynamic nature of conversations occurring 24/7.
So go find your nearest Questgiver Terminal today.
Maybe you'll even strike up a conversation over what you both witness...
