The late instar is plump and fully formed after steadily gorging on the toxic leaves of the milkweed. Choosing a safe, sturdy and secluded spot carefully on the underside of a milkweed leaf will be critical as it will take several weeks to mature in its chrysalis stage. It positions itself in preparation of weaving a delicate silk pad to anchor itself on the surface before turning around and securing itself. Its bright and contrasting stripes will soon be shed as it begins its transformation into its adult form. It will then straighten and hang upside down before splitting it's skin to reveal the chrysalis within. (Danaus plexippus)
The Monarch butterfly has been now been declared an endangered species due to habitat loss due to deforestation, from pesticides and disruptions to migration patterns due to climate change. It feeds on Milkweed - do your part to help protect this creature by planting milkweed such as the easy to grow Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and protecting natural spaces. Make efforts to push for action through intersectional climate justice in whichever path your passion lies. We are all connected with everything on this life covered surface of a molten rock hurtling through space, it's going to take all of us.
