Precipice represents the tipping point of my career. This image became the Drift Movie Cover, Tracks Magazine Cover, was the emphasis for my documentary 'One Shot', and redefined the possibilities of extreme ocean water photography.
This once in a lifetime moment was captured kilometres out to sea at the world's premier big wave location. Before then no photographer had ever ventured to take shots while swimming out there. The waves are equivalent to five-story apartment blocks, the current is pulling you into the danger zone, and there have been multiple sitings of great white sharks.
Before committing to this expedition, I engaged in years of heavy water training, learning how to hold my breath and ultimately be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. The only challenge from there was convincing my wife and three children that I was going to be safe and make it home alive.
I am extremely humbled to be one of the pioneers of big wave photography. This moment propelled me into truly life-changing experiences and paved the way for future photographers to push their limits and capture their own amazing moments.
