May 22, a day that may not have a color on any country’s official calendar, is becoming a true legend in the world of cryptocurrencies. The day an anonymous programmer made history with two pizzas.
Laszlo Hanic, a man who was then just an avid user on the Bitcointalk forum, made an offer in 2010 that now sounds more like a joke:
“I want two pizzas, and I’ll give you 10,000 Bitcoins in exchange.”
At the time, Bitcoin was still a crude idea; each unit was worth less than a cent, and the total was about $30. But that simple transaction, those regular pizzas, turned into the first real purchase with Bitcoin. The signs that this cryptocurrency could move out of the realm of theory and into reality.
Today, May 22 is called “Pizza Day.” A day that reminds us that the biggest revolutions sometimes start with the smallest bites. Maybe Laszlo was just hungry that day, but he inadvertently ate one of the most historic bites in the world of technology.
