Artist Statement

In the relatively short time since the millennium, one small object has involved itself in our everyday existence more so than any other in our entire history. For most of us, our phones are so ingrained in our daily routine that we spend more time with them than anything or anyone else. With conservative estimates placing average phone usage above 3 hours per day (a total of 35 full days spent on our phones a year), prominent researchers are acknowledging that, “A lot of smartphone use seems to be habitual . . . automatic behaviours that we have no awareness of.” [Dr. Richard House]

Aside from this astounding physical connection, our phones are the main access point to our less tangible but increasingly important other halves: our digital selves. Everyday these online personas play a more significant role in our lives and in offering a sense of who we are. Seeing that our phones provide the main portal of connection to these digital selves, a greater understanding of the incredible influence they can have seems essential.
