In this artwork I wanted to recreate a scene that never happened, imagining how it could have unfolded if it had truly taken place.
Caravaggio begs Pope Paul V for forgiveness for having killed Ranuccio Tomassoni.
Caravaggio explains what happened to the Pope, hoping to have his death sentence lifted.
The Pope wants to grant him pardon because he admires his talent, but even as he reaches out his hand, they fail to reach an agreement: holding him back is Ranuccio, Pope Paul V’s close friend, who — invisible because he is dead — whispers to the Pope not to grant clemency.
The background is an empty black void, in the Caravaggesque style of total black and chiaroscuro, evoking the tension between light and shadow.
The piece is created as a 3D render, with a minimalist style: the figures appear as sculptures suspended in the void, with no distractions, focusing all attention on the drama of their expressions and gestures.
