Lee Miller was an American surrealist photographer and photojournalist. She was Man Ray's favorite model and posed for many of his work. When one of her friends underwent a mastectomy, she stole it and slipped it out of the hospital to later photograph. Her intentions were to refer to the breasts and to the idea that women were perceived as sexual attributes. Linking breasts to the wifely duty of food preparation then accentuated her anger at societies attitudes towards women. This was the 1920's.
In this video, I make a direct citation to Lee Miller's concepts with my own breast capsules given to me after an explant operation. Nearly one hundred years later, these conceptions still stand in our global culture. This work intends to reflect upon women's role in societies, specially in Latin America where beauty and other impositions are still established as a norm.
