Olympe de Gouges was a French playwright and political activist whose writings on women's rights and abolitionism reached a large audience in various countries. Today, she is mostly known for her pioneering views on women's rights. She thought that the tyranny of men over women was the source of all forms of inequality. She published the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and Citizen in 1791 in response to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen issued by the Assembly.
