Using a photo I took while working on an anti-advertising, augmented reality street art project in NYC (2014), "New Vandalism" considers the interconnected relationship between crypto-art, digital art, and street art. My crypto work is a direct extension of my earlier digital art, which is an extension of my street art murals using both mixed reality and prints (wheatpaste and vinyl) installed in public, mostly urban spaces. Although becoming more accepted by mainstream museums and galleries in recent decades, all three related, but discrete media are still considered somewhat on the outside of the academy looking in and the "vandalism" aura typically associated with urban graffiti interventions still lingers. Vandalism is the action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property... in this case... a kind of vandalism of the fine art establishment by using blockchain to circumvent and disrupt traditional modes of buying and selling art, which seems to be a healthy, natural evolution.
