As landscape photographers, we are on a constant hunt for rare conditions with the ultimate goal of capturing an event that will happen once in a lifetime. My chance came in late July of 2020 when Comet Neowise made it’s short appearance as it passed by earth’s atmosphere at 40 miles per second. Neowise came to its peak brightness for 4-5 days when the comet's iron trail stretched across the night sky making it visible to the naked eye.
Weeks of planning, scouting, and miles of cycling went into capturing this one off shot. Night after night I hiked or cycled up north facing Bay Area peaks searching for a unique way to capture the comet. On the last of the brutal climbs with a fully loaded camera bag, my dream conditions started to roll in across the environment. My adrenaline skyrocketed as fog started to fill the small valleys around me. All that time and effort paid off as I stood alone in the fog capturing my favorite landscape photograph to date.
