There is no coastline like that of the small island of Kauai. Ocean waves crash into the razor-sharp ridges that span 17 miles across. My first ever journey outside of the mainland of the United States led me to this incredible island that stole my heart. It accelerated my love and passion for photography and now holds an extraordinary place in my life journey.
The valley pictured is known as Kalalau. In my opinion, it is the most impressive section of coastline in the world. The beach below can only be accessed by boat or kayak, with the only alternative being an 11-mile hike. As my photography progressed, I always prioritized making it back to the island to appreciate the beauty that gave me so much creative motivation. Every visit comes with new adventures, and the fast-changing weather creates once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.
The clouds often hang above the ridges bringing a plethora of rain, intensifying the landscape. I have photographed the Kalalau valley from many angles and in various conditions, but this evening was unlike any other. Clouds and showers engulfed the coastline until the very last bit of sunlight. What happened next took me by complete surprise. The dense fog slowly lifted from the valley, showing off the rugged terrain. Beams of light illuminated the rainfall creating two incredible rainbows. In my previous visits, the conditions were never so favorable. The moment was fleeting and my adrenaline taking this image was through the roof. With my hands shaking, I took several drone photos that I knew I would later stitch together to show off the grand scale of this view. A real “Natural Beauty” that had been formed over generations, constantly evolving. I have never felt my heart beat so fast while standing still. I am blessed to have experienced such a moment, with what felt like the stars aligning. My entire photography journey took me back to that particular place, and the earth showed off like never before. These brief moments are engraved in my memory and continue to inspire and motivate my endeavors. This moment was simply unforgettable. 7399x4933
