“mother.” is a piece that comes from a deeply personal part of me. I moved, all the way across the world away from my mother when I was just 16. I did it of my own accord, to gain independence and make a life for myself, but I still felt extremely cut off from her. I missed the long walks we used to take, the late-night conversations, and the way I could confide in her about anything at all. My mother had supported me all through some of the darker times in my life, and she’d supported my passion for art from the very beginning. And all of a sudden, I’d lost that support system.
This piece is a visual representation of the very real spatial divide that now exists between my mother and me, and our efforts to not let that divide affect our relationship.
