The Mona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde) is a 16th-century oil painting portrait painted in the Sfumato technique on a poplar panel by Leonardo da Vinci during the Renaissance in Florence, Italy. The painting is currently exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris under the title Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. A seated woman is depicted in the painting. The identity of the woman's face still remains a mystery. This picture became widely known; caricatures were made, researched and considered as one of the most important works of the Louvre Museum.
