"Malungo" is a retelling of the iconographic figure of Brazilian music Chico Science. Science with Nação Zumbi were precursors of the Manguebeat movement that began in the 90's. They revolutionized the Brazilian music scene, bringing the Pernambuco culture that mixed rock, frevo, pop, hiphop, soulmusic, ska and other rhythms. Sadly Science passed away in 1997 in a car accident. But his legacy is immortalized in the two classic albums Afrociberdalia and Da lama ao chaos.
Technique: The reinterpretation of Malungo is entirely done in woodcut. Each color receives a matrix, the print is made from the lightest tones to the darkest tones. It's a sequenced matrix technique that requires a good template from the printmaker to be able to run the overlays until the image is formed!
