M57 was formed about 4,000 years ago when a star shed it's outer layers, leaving the white dwarf seen dead center of the nebula. On Earth, mathematics was developed by the Babylonians, during the transition from the middle to late Bronze Age. The light from this explosion wouldn't have reached us until 2,750 years later, though, or about 750 AD.
