We arrived at the coast to find locked pier gates and a solitary traffic cone placed on the curved deck of the (609m) long Grade 2 listed building that is Roker Pier and Lighthouse, in Sunderland. I hunkered down to take some long exposure shots of the lone cone. It was later revealed that a 5m wave had knocked one of a group of anglers back into the metal railings, breaking his leg. He’d been airlifted to Hospital and the others were led to safety through the tunnel that runs beneath the pier.
