The 2019-2021 protests and riots in Baltimore were part of the larger Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement that swept across the United States. Sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, protests erupted nationwide, including in Baltimore, in an outcry against systemic racism and police brutality. The city witnessed both peaceful demonstrations and instances of unrest.
The protests in Baltimore called attention to the history of racial disparities, particularly in the city's policing, echoing the 2015 unrest following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. The movement demanded justice and police reform, seeking accountability for officers involved in cases of excessive force.
The protests featured a diverse coalition of activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, with some advocating for defunding the police and reallocating resources to social services. The events underscored the urgent need for addressing racial injustice and inspired ongoing conversations and policy changes.
Baltimore's involvement in the BLM movement, like many other cities, highlighted the pressing need to address racial inequalities and create a more just and equitable society.
