Cosette is one of the central and most beloved characters in Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables. She is the illegitimate daughter of Fantine, abandoned in childhood and raised (mistreated and exploited) by the cruel Thénardier family as a servant. Jean Valjean rescues her, buys her freedom, and raises her as his own daughter with deep love and protection. She grows into a beautiful, gentle, innocent, and kind young woman. In her youth, she falls in love with Marius Pontmercy, and their pure romance becomes one of the most touching love stories in the book. Cosette symbolizes innocence, hope, redemption through love, and the possibility of a better future after suffering. She moves from a life of misery and hardship in childhood to happiness and peace by the end of the novel, marrying Marius.
