Kanga is a lightweight pastel coloured fabric mostly worn by women across the African great lakes region. This piece of cloth has a visible border design on all four edges called ‘pindo’ in Swahili and a central design part known as ‘miji’. This piece of fabric is culturally significant along the eastern coast of Africa and is largely used a gift item.
The earliest pattern of the kanga featured small dots or speckles which look like the plumage of the guinea hen, also called "kanga" in Swahili. This is where the name comes from.
