Founded by the Irish Citizen Army and the Irish Volunteers who participated in the Irish War of Independence (1919-1922), two groups advocating armed struggle will take as name the IRA (Irish Republican Army).
The IRA will mainly operate in Northern Ireland, where certain neighborhoods at certain times will be occupied by them.
Several splits will take place for ideological reasons, on the acceptance of treaties or collaboration with the British and for the desire to continue the armed struggles.
The British were to be at the origin of several scandals such as Bloody Sunday in 1970 where the army fired on demonstrators, or the aid of several British groups using violence against Irish civilians.
The most extremist groups in the IRA will carry out several bombings and assassinations, and will come under heavy repression by the British with the help of the Ulster Loyalists.
Some of the loyalists are part of the police force, they do not want Irish independence and they too will carry out, with the help of the police, several attacks and assassinations affecting Irish civilians with no real legal repercussions.
