The perfection of the Portuguese Man O' War. I photographed this creature, considered by some to be a colony of animals, off Nonsuch Island in Bermuda, on one of my many trips to document the country's marine life.
The community of animals that Physalia is part of, and which includes the blue sea star - Porpita, Jack sail by the wind - Velella and the exquisite blue sea slug - Glaucus, had long captivated me. These creatures spend their lives drifting on the ocean currents, suspended on or under the surface of the ocean - susceptible to all that nature's wind, sun and water could throw at it.
The tentacles of this incredible individual, a study in pastel blues and pinks, is the most perfect of literally thousands that I have encountered over the years. It felt only right that it should be immortalised on the blockchain.
